I can’t remember how long I have watched the passage of stars across the night sky, Orion the Hunter following Taurus. Marking the passage of time, but also showing the enormity of the universe. The idea of time, of infinite space about us. Our small rock, part of this orchestra we can all see, even as we take our place in its music.
Shows where it comes from
in the night, travelling softly
Miles and time to your eyes
if only you’d look up, just once,
there’s history arriving,
if you raise your eyes
in that cold winter
not dark sky.
In the UK, there are now areas designated as Dark Skies Areas. To stop the encroachment of light pollution, and leave spaces to look up. I’m lucky that to the South of our house the light from town drops off quite quickly, giving me the opportunity to try out some night sky photography. Next time you have the opportunity to look up at the night sky, take it. Wrap up warm, and spend time to see whats out there, in all the wide amazing patterns we have named and watched for hundreds of years. Remember how long it takes to get here. Quite a journey don’t you think.
